Last week I had the chance to speak with Richard (Rich) Guthrie. He recently joined the Dining Center staff and you may know him as the person who keeps the omelet station running smoothly in the morning! Read on to learn a little more about Rich.
What do you like to do in your spare time ?
In his spare time, Rich enjoys exercise, especially running. In fact, he is a professional marathoner. He started training at 23 and started competing at 27, so he’s been playing the sport for almost 20 years. He is a very successful runner; he was previously interviewed on national radio for winning a 7km – almost 5 mile – race in just 22 minutes. You can see more of his race times here, and here. Next month, he’ll run a half marathon in Philadelphia, his first since arriving in the US in 2017. You might see him running in the GIAC, or outdoors to get used to the cold. Besides running, he also enjoys watching television; action movies are his favorites. He loves old school movies like Terminator 2 or pretty much anything that includes Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Where did you grow up
Rich was born and raised in Kingston, the capital of Jamaica. Growing up, he enjoyed being active and outdoors, flying kites, playing marbles and finding his passions in sports. He mainly played football and competed until the age of 23. He reached a Jamaican professional league, but had to turn to running due to injuries.
What’s your favorite part of Haverford and your job here?
Rich’s favorite part in Haverford and his job here is cooking and interacting with the students on a daily basis. He enjoys giving uplifting advice and treats us like family. He hopes to have a positive impact on everyone.
How is working at Haverford different from other places you’ve worked?
Rich has held several jobs in the food industry since arriving in the United States. He worked as a preparatory cook in a hospital and in a Jamaican restaurant in Philadelphia. He has always had a passion for cooking since the age of 15. Rich said the experience at Haverford is amazing because he has never worked with so many longtime staff, so much of the food court staff has been working in Haverford for twenty or even thirty years. In addition, Rich is a new member of the Haverford community, who arrived less than two months ago. He is delighted to be a part of this warm culture and to continue to familiarize himself with the campus.
What’s your favorite dish?
Rich’s favorite food to eat and prepare is steamed fish with crackers. It is part of the popular Jamaican cuisine because it is not difficult to make, but very delicious. Fun Fact: Rich has been a vegetarian for 17 years and still enjoys a diet of vegetables, fruits, nuts, and all kinds of beans because it promotes a healthy lifestyle.
