People with norovirus disease usually develop symptoms of gastroenteritis within 24 to 48 hours, but symptoms can appear as early as 12 hours after exposure. The disease often begins suddenly. Even after contracting the disease, you can still be reinfected with norovirus. The main symptoms of norovirus disease are diarrhea, vomiting (children usually vomit more than adults), nausea and stomach cramps. Other symptoms may include mild fever, headache, chills, muscle aches, and fatigue (a general feeling of tiredness). Most people feel better within a day or two, symptoms go away on their own, and experience no long-term health effects. As with any illness that causes diarrhea or vomiting, sick people should drink plenty of fluids to replace lost body fluids and prevent dehydration. In severe cases, patients may need to be hospitalized and given intravenous fluids.
