Mother-son duo opens Lutfi’s Fried Fish restaurant in Shawnee
Fried fish from Lutfi, a Kansas City-based restaurant chain, has a new location in Shawnee.
Dana Gilbert and her son, Deandre Sherrils, co-own the new fried fish restaurant at 13225 Shawnee Mission Parkway. The mother-son couple have worked at other Lutfi’s Fried Fish restaurants for the past four years and decided their momentum should be spent on their own franchise operation.
âMy son’s passion is cooking; my passion is family and business, âsaid Gilbert, adding that the restaurant is run entirely by the family. âSo the two together: he likes the cooking side, I love the human side. We try to make restaurants family-friendly and get to know our customers.
Additionally, “lutfi” (pronounced LOO-fee) is an Arabic name meaning “kind and friendly”. Gilbert said they strive to put this meaning into their work and dining environment.
The restaurant’s smooth opening took place this week, but the restaurant’s grand opening begins at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 19. The grand opening will include light refreshments, balloons and meetings with staff.
Lutfi’s Fried Fish features a mix of fish, shrimp, and smoked chicken in a Southern New Orleans way. Fish and shrimp can be served blackened, fried or steamed.
âAll the sites are trying to stay together and work together; we don’t like to separate one place from another, âGilbert said. “However, you will walk into each place and find something different.”
Gilbert said that in addition to the regular Lutfi menu, they will serve red snapper. Guests can also expect seafood events on Fridays. And the restaurant’s decorations also feature messages of love, God and thanksgiving.
âEverything you find on the walls is about who we are and what we are,â she added.
Gilbert said they chose the location on Shawnee Mission Parkway because it is a great place to shop. They also don’t see a lot of competition from other restaurants for their offerings.
âWe just wanted to bring something different to the region,â she said. âThere is no fried fish here. Unless they get it from Price Choppers⦠no one is fishing.
Normal business hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.
