Greek Lemon Rice Recipe

One of my favorite things about Greek takeaways is the unbelievable accompanying lemon rice. I always want more! It’s creamy, flavorful and packed with the best lemony flavor! You can easily recreate these flavors at home with just a few simple ingredients. And if you are not already convinced, its preparation only takes 5 minutes!

This delicious Lemon Rice comes with a mixture of long grain rice, butter, chicken broth, lemon juice, lemon zest and a few extra seasonings to take the flavor to the next level. All you have to do is put these ingredients in a pot and simmer for 20 minutes! It’s so easy and convenient! This allows me to work on the main dish while cooking.

All the necessary ingredients

That’s all you’ll need to bring that delicious lemony edge to life. With the simplicity of the ingredient list, you’ll want to make lemon rice all the time! You can find the exact measurements for each ingredient in the recipe card below.

  • Chicken broth: This is the liquid in which your rice will cook. It adds the best savory flavor! You can also replace it with vegetable broth.
  • Uncooked rice: I used long grain! You can also use jasmine or basmati rice.
  • Butter: Adds creaminess and rich flavor.
  • Garlic powder: I love adding garlic powder as it gives the rice an extra savory flavor.
  • Lemon zest: I like lemon! Add less or more to your taste.
  • Lemon juice: This is a recipe where you will always want to use fresh lemon juice. It makes the flavor so much better!
  • Fresh basilic: You know I love fresh herbs! Adding chopped basil is a perfect finishing touch and gives the dish a bit more flavor.

How to Make Greek Lemon Rice

There is nothing easier than that! This is why lemon rice is one of my favorite side dishes. It’s as simple as throwing canned rice mix on the stove.

  1. Add the ingredients to the jar: In a medium saucepan with lid, combine chicken broth, rice, butter, lemon juice and lemon zest.
  2. Boiling: Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to simmer.
  3. Simmer: Cover the pot and let the rice simmer slowly for 20 minutes or until the liquid is absorbed.
  4. Add the filling: Fluff with a fork, salt if necessary and garnish with chopped fresh basil.

Storing leftovers

I always make a big batch of Lemon Rice so I can enjoy it throughout the week! It keeps very well and is perfect for a quick and tasty lunch.

  • In the refrigerator: Store leftover lemon rice in an airtight container for 3-4 days.
  • Reheating: To quickly reheat your lemon rice, transfer it to a microwave-safe bowl, sprinkle with a little water, and cook for 30 seconds or until heated through. Stir occasionally to ensure it is evenly cooked. You can also reheat your rice on the stovetop, adding a pinch of water, then reheat over medium heat. Stir occasionally.
